Before embarking on the NCL Pride of America, we spent seven nights at Hyatt Regency Waikiki Beach Resort and Spa. We were in Waikiki during peak travel season, and because we were staying for a full week, we wanted somewhere comfortable, central, and reliable rather than just grabbing the cheapest room we could find.
Waikiki hotels were not exactly shy with pricing during our stay, and the Hyatt Regency was definitely up there. Given the length of time we were staying, we paid a little extra for an Ocean Front King Room, and honestly, the view was the best part of the whole stay.
The hotel itself was a bit more complicated.
First Impressions
The Hyatt Regency Waikiki is a very large hotel, and you feel that almost immediately. With 40 floors across two towers and more than 1,200 rooms, this is not a quiet boutique escape. It caters to the masses, and during peak season, the masses were very much present.
The property sits above a small outdoor mall, with shops and convenience stores underneath, which is actually very handy. Need sunscreen, snacks, water, coffee, or some random thing you forgot to pack? Easy. Location-wise, it is hard to fault. You are directly across from the main beach area and within easy walking distance of most of the places visitors come to Waikiki for.
The interiors, though, felt dated. Not neglected, just lacking much personality. It had that large-hotel look where everything is functional, polished enough, and clearly designed to handle high guest volume, but it never really gave us a sense of place. For a hotel in such a prime Waikiki location, we would have loved a bit more warmth and character.
The Room
We booked a King Ocean Front Room, and this was absolutely the right decision for a seven-night stay. The room was much larger than many standard hotel rooms we have stayed in across the US, with a generous king bed, a separate lounge area, and a desk space.
The balcony and ocean-facing view were the standout. Waking up to that stretch of Waikiki each morning made the extra cost feel worthwhile, especially because we were there long enough to properly enjoy it.
Inside, the room was comfortable and practical rather than particularly stylish. The bathroom was fairly standard, with a shower over bath and a separate vanity area. It did the job, but it was not the sort of bathroom that makes you linger or feel like you are in a premium resort.
Still, for space, comfort, and view, the room delivered.
Location
This is where the Hyatt Regency Waikiki really earns its keep.
You are right across from Waikiki Beach, close to restaurants, shopping, cafés, ABC Stores, and the general buzz of the area. For a first-time Waikiki stay, or for anyone who wants to be right in the thick of it, the location is excellent.
It is central without needing a car, and for us, that made a big difference. We could head out for a walk, grab dinner, wander the beach, pick up supplies, and be back in the room without any effort. On a longer stay, that ease really matters.
Breakfast
Breakfast was included in the rate we booked through Qantas Hotels, which was a nice bonus because included breakfast is not always a given at US hotels.
The buffet was a fairly standard hotel breakfast buffet, but with a broad range of options. There was a made-to-order egg station, hot dishes, pastries, fruit, cereals, and enough variety that we were not bored immediately, even across a full week.
Was it the most exciting breakfast we have ever had? No. Was it convenient, generous, and appreciated every morning before heading out? Absolutely.
Facilities
The pool was one of the weaker points for us. For a hotel of this size, it felt far too small. Every time we walked past, it looked busy, and the sun lounge situation did not feel particularly relaxing. We never ended up using it, which probably says enough. For those who do use it, it does have a convenient towel hire/return system.
Hyatt lists Nā Ho‘ōla Spa as the onsite spa, offering treatments including massages, facials, body treatments, and access to a dry sauna, but we did not use it during this stay.
The gym looked quite decent from what we saw, although it is very much on display, with floor-to-ceiling glass windows along the main corridor on the pool level. Great if you like people seeing your commitment to cardio. Less great if, like us, you prefer your treadmill suffering to be a private matter.
There is also a self-service laundry, which was genuinely useful. Because we were staying a week before moving on to the next destination, being able to do washing before the cruise was a big win. That said, you had to be strategic about when you went. There were often people lined up waiting to use the machines, and while laundry is practical, we would still rather be out exploring Waikiki than guarding a dryer.
Food and Drink
One thing worth noting is that the hotel only had one main bar option onsite. That may not matter to everyone, but for some travellers, especially on a resort-style stay, bar options are part of the experience.
For us, it would have been nice to have another spot for a drink in the evening, especially given the size of the hotel. Waikiki has plenty of bars and restaurants nearby, so it was not a major issue, but within the hotel itself, the food and drink offering did feel a little limited for such a large property.
Service
The staff were lovely throughout our stay. Everyone we dealt with was accommodating, friendly, and happy to help. In a hotel this large and busy, service can sometimes feel rushed or impersonal, but we had no complaints on that front.
The team were doing a good job managing a high-volume hotel in peak season, and we always felt looked after when we needed something.
What We Loved
- The location was the biggest win. Being directly across from Waikiki Beach and close to almost everything made the stay very easy.
- The room size was also a major plus. For a seven-night stay, having proper space to spread out made a real difference.
- The ocean view was worth the upgrade. If you are staying here, we would strongly consider paying extra for a room with a proper view.
- The self-service laundry was not glamorous, but it was genuinely useful before heading off on a cruise.
What Could Be Better
- The elevator wait times could be frustrating. With that many rooms and guests moving between floors, there were times when getting up or down took longer than expected.
- The pool area felt too small for the size of the hotel. It was crowded whenever we passed by, and it did not feel like the relaxing resort pool setup we would have hoped for.
- The interiors could use more personality. Everything worked, but the overall design felt dated and a bit bland.
- An additional bar or lounge would make sense for a hotel this large, particularly for guests staying several nights.
Would We Stay Again?
Maybe, but with realistic expectations.
Hyatt Regency Waikiki Beach Resort and Spa is a solid choice if location, room size, and ocean views are your priorities. It worked well for us because we were staying a full week before a cruise and wanted a central, comfortable base with easy access to the beach and surrounding area.
But it is not a quiet luxury hotel. It is big, busy, and at times feels more like a high-volume Waikiki machine than a relaxing resort. If you are after calm, boutique design, a spacious pool area, or a more intimate hotel experience, this probably is not the one.
For us, the ocean front room made the stay. Without that view, we may have felt differently about the value. But as a practical pre-cruise base in the heart of Waikiki, it did the job well.
Our advice, book the view, use the location, time your laundry carefully, and do not expect the pool to be your peaceful escape.
