We love a hotel that makes arriving feel like a moment, and Grand Hyatt Melbourne does exactly that. Smack bang on Collins Street, it puts you right in the heart of the city. Perfect if you’re here to eat, shop, theatre-hop, or just roam around pretending you’re in a Vogue travel spread.
From the second we stepped into the lobby (big ceilings, even bigger energy), we got the vibe that this place doesn’t try too hard, because it doesn’t need to. The location sells itself, and the building stands tall enough that even standard rooms come with views worth pausing for.
We picked the Grand Hyatt for a quick city break, mostly because we’d heard whispers of that breakfast buffet (more on that soon), and we were overdue for a Melbourne fix that didn’t involve a budget Airbnb and noise-cancelling earplugs.
What we found was a hotel that balances polish with comfort, with staff who were genuinely lovely, rooms that surprised us with their size, and a gym that honestly made us wish we packed less croissants and more motivation.
Hard to beat the location, really. You’re right in the thick of the CBD, close to laneways, shopping centres, Fed Square, theatres, all of it. We walked everywhere and never felt too far away from anything.

The Room
We booked a Deluxe King, and it was more spacious than we expected, especially for a city hotel. The layout included a proper lounge-style sitting area (rare for non-suite rooms), which gave the space a homey, apartment feel without sacrificing any of the hotel elements.
We were on a high floor, so the city views were a real feature. Waking up to that Melbourne skyline never does get old.
The bathroom was big too, with loads of bench space and room for two people to move around without doing the awkward towel shuffle. Everything felt clean, classic, and comfortable and not overly flashy, but done well.
Style-wise, the room leans more traditional luxury than cutting-edge design. Think warm tones, plush textures, and a few spots where you can tell the hotel’s been around a while, but nothing that got in the way of the experience.
Facilities & Amenities
Let’s talk gym, because wow. The fitness centre here is massive. Easily one of the biggest we’ve seen in an Aussie hotel. Full cardio setup, weights, stretch zones, and 24-hour access. If hotel gyms usually disappoint you, this one will redeem them.
The pool, on the other hand, isn’t going to win any design awards. It’s indoors, functional, and fine for a dip, but definitely not laps and not a resort-style scene. If you’re someone who likes a pool moment on holiday, just set expectations accordingly.
There’s also a spa and sauna setup, which we didn’t use this time, but it’s a nice bonus if you’re here for a bit of self-care between shopping sprees or meetings.
Service & Vibe
The staff were genuinely friendly and helpful, which honestly made the stay feel more relaxed. Nothing felt overly formal or scripted, just polite, switched-on service.
The vibe overall is a mix of business travellers, couples, and city explorers. It’s not trying to be a trendy scene or a design hotel, which, frankly, is part of why it works. It knows what it is and doesn’t fuss about it
Breakfast (Yes, It’s That Good)
We’d heard whispers about the Collins Kitchen breakfast buffet, and can confirm they weren’t exaggerating. It’s easily one of the best hotel breakfasts we’ve had in Australia.
There’s variety without the chaos, fresh pastries, dumplings (yes, dumplings), made-to-order eggs, fruit, cheeses, and coffee that holds up to Melbourne’s high standards. If breakfast is a big deal to you, this one delivers. Many locals will head here for breakfast meetings.
Points, Perks & Booking
We booked a standard rate (no points this time), and while there was no upgrade, the room was already generous enough that we didn’t mind. If you’re a Hyatt loyalist, you’ll get your perks but even without elite status, the experience was smooth.
What We Loved
- Properly spacious room with separate sitting area
- Collins Kitchen breakfast is a win
- Big gym with great facilities
- Friendly, efficient service
- Top-tier CBD location
What Could’ve Been Better
- Pool feels a bit dated
- Room tech is behind the times (no smart TV, awkward plugs)
- Some areas of the hotel could use a refresh
The Bottom Line
Grand Hyatt Melbourne isn’t trying to be a design-forward hotspot or a hip boutique stay. What it is is a big, reliable, well-located hotel that gets the basics right with some real standouts like breakfast and service.
Would we stay again? Yep. It’s not flashy, but it’s solid and sometimes, that’s exactly what you want
