Welcome to Finolhu Baa Atoll Maldives, where five-star luxury meets that sweet spot of beachy barefoot bliss. This isn’t your typical over-polished, overly-precious resort, Finolhu delivers high-end service and jaw-dropping beauty, but with a playful, unpretentious twist that makes you feel instantly at ease. It’s located in the UNESCO-listed Baa Atoll Biosphere Reserve, and while we know there are fancier spots out there, this one hit that perfect balance of glam and chill we were craving. We did a lot of research, and Finolhu kept bubbling to the top, and to be honest, we’re really glad we went with our gut.

The Journey In
Getting to Finolhu is an adventure in itself. After landing in Malé, we were ushered to a private lounge while waiting for our seaplane transfer. Most Maldives resorts have their own lounges, which is a luxe way to ease into island mode. The seaplane ride however, was equal parts exhilarating and hilarious. It’s small, hot, and very “this is your captain speaking, possibly barefoot.” which added a lot to the charm and helped us ignore the poor girl puking at the back of the plan.
But then… you land. And step onto that dock and suddenly, no picture you’ve ever seen has prepared you for how breathtaking it is. We were speechless (which, if you know Craig, never happens). The colours, the calm, the whole scene is like being dropped into a dream.

The Property
From the moment we stepped off the seaplane, Finolhu nailed the welcome. We were greeted with cool eucalyptus-scented towels and a tropical welcome drink that hit all the right notes after the humid flight. Luggage was swiftly taken away (without us even realising it), and the check-in process started, with a staff member walking us through everything while we soaked up our first real look at paradise.
Then came the buggy tour, a private spin around the atoll that gave us our first glimpse of just how thoughtfully designed the property is. Vibrant art installations against soft pastel buildings, and each corner of the island had its own little personality. From beach villas tucked behind greenery to the playful, retro-chic vibe of the main bar and pool area, everything felt fresh, stylish, and deliberately different from your typical ultra-minimalist Maldives vibe.
When we finally arrived at our overwater villa, our jaws hit the wooden deck, it was that magical.
Being in the Baa Atoll, Finolhu is surrounded by some of the most vibrant marine life in the Maldives. You can literally snorkel off your villa and see magic. Weather-wise, it’s tropical so expect occasional afternoon showers that pass quickly. We had just one short storm the whole week, and it came and went before we finished our drinks.
The Room (Villa)
We stayed in an Ocean Pool Villa and the second we walked in, we knew we were in for something special. A king-size bed perfectly positioned to face the ocean, a bathroom bigger than our apartment back home, with both indoor and outdoor showers, a deep bathtub and every amenity you could want.

But the real showstopper was the private infinity pool with unobstructed views straight out to the horizon. The outdoor lounge area was the ultimate chill zone, and honestly, we could’ve spent our entire holiday right there. Every sunrise and sunset felt like a private screening of Mother Nature’s best work.
Food and Drink
There was no shortage of food options, and we were consistently impressed by both the variety and quality.
Breakfast was served buffet-style with everything from tropical fruits to sushi to made-to-order eggs. It was basically a culinary tour of the world before 10am.
Lunch also had some brilliant choices. Our top pick was the atoll’s very own Crab Shack. You get there by boat or a sandy stroll (we tried both), and dine with your feet in the sand while a DJ spins laid-back beachy beats. Add in the company of a few curious hermit crabs and it’s basically the island version of a power lunch.
Dinner however, was most definitely next level. Our favourite was Kanusan, the Japanese fusion restaurant suspended over the water. Every dish felt like a mini celebration, sophisticated, flavourful, and absolutely stunning to look at and the staff were happy to give us a taste of just about everything we wanted from the menu.
The drinks were also, always made to perfection. Because we were on the premium plan, we never hesitated to order champagne at lunch or a beachside cocktail at 10am (no judgment here). We need to also mention the staff. They were extremely attentive and they got to know our orders so well, sometimes a piña colada would magically appear before we even asked.
Amenities and Service
Finolhu has the kind of service that makes you feel like royalty without ever tipping into stuffy. The custom resort app let us message our villa concierge directly to schedule buggy pickups (or anything else), but we often preferred the walk along the boardwalk because of the crystal-clear water and colourful fish along the way.
There were plenty of sun loungers and beach spots available, even though we visited during a popular travel time. We also lucked out because about half the villas were closed for renovations, which meant the island felt blissfully empty that it almost felt like we had the atoll to ourselves.
We didn’t sign up for many activities (unless you count reading a good book with a cocktail as an activity, which, honestly, we do), but there were ample options for those who wanted them. From snorkeling, water sports to excursions, you name it.
One small thing to note however, there’s just one lagoon-style pool, and while it has a swim-up bar (yay), there’s no separation between adults and kids. The staff tried to keep things chill, but the occasional splashy cannonball did break the vibe a bit.

They had entertainment nightly, from acrobatic shows and fire dancing in the main bar through to the White Party each Friday during sunset for all guests. DJs were always around so the vibes were always good.
The on site spa was also a little extra treat. While not included within any packages, we did treat ourselves to a few massages, which were some of the best we’ve ever had, particularly from a hotel or resort.
Points, Perks and Booking Details
We booked a Luxury Escapes package and decided to upgrade to the Premium All-Inclusive option and let us tell you, it was worth every sip. Picture free-flowing French champagne, top-shelf spirits, cocktails whenever and wherever you wanted, it elevated the entire experience and removed any mental math about what was “included” or not. If you’re tossing up whether to splurge on it, we say go for it as it made everything feel a bit more seamless and indulgent.
The Bottom Line
We love when a resort actually lives up to the hype, and Finolhu went above and beyond. From the moment we arrived, we were wrapped in a sense of calm, comfort, and cheeky indulgence.
We loved how it offered true five-star luxury without any of the snobbery, just genuine, thoughtful service and a setting so beautiful, it bordered on surreal. That with the effortless vibe of reading on the deck, sipping cocktails that arrived before we even asked, and staff who knew us so well, we felt like regulars by day two.
Would we go back? Absolutely. If you want all the glam of a Maldives escape with none of the pretension, Finolhu is your place. It’s ideal for couples looking to disconnect, celebrate, or just spoil themselves. Yes, there may be more polished resorts out there, but this one had heart, soul, and that rare mix of cool-meets-comfort. We’re already dreaming of a return visit one day, preferably with another piña colada in hand.
