Some gifts are thoughtful but others are unforgettable. When dear friends surprised us with a stay at Capella Sydney as a wedding present, it was the kind of generosity that left us speechless. Add in Craig’s birthday and the fact that we’d just wrapped up a particularly gruelling gym challenge, and this overnight stay quickly became the reward of all rewards.
First Impressions
Even before we stepped foot in the lobby, Capella Sydney was already showing off. The team reached out ahead of time to confirm the booking details and ask about any personal preferences. It was attentive, polished, and deeply personalised.
That special feeling only deepens when you walk into the building itself. Capella occupies the beautifully restored Department of Education building, a heritage-listed sandstone icon with over a century of history. The restoration has preserved its grand colonnades, stately staircases, and intricate ceilings, seamlessly blending old-world elegance with modern luxury. You can feel the layers of Sydney’s past in the walls, yet everything feels fresh and thoughtfully curated.
Nestled in Sydney’s CBD, Capella is within walking distance to pretty much everything you could want. Whether you’re heading to Barangaroo, Circular Quay, or just hunting for a late-night snack, the location is pure gold. But the real magic starts once you walk through the doors.
The Room
Luxury can be flashy, or it can be quietly confident. The rooms at Capella are the latter. Ours featured soaring ceilings, gorgeous architectural detailing, and an incredible amount of space. The king bed was all kinds of dreamy and the bathroom was an absolute sanctuary. Think deep soaking tub, a sprawling shower, and the kind of lighting that makes you feel like you’re in your own high-end spa ad. it felt more like a retreat than a hotel room.
Dining and Drinks
Breakfast was included in our stay, and we loved the hybrid approach, a selection of quality buffet options paired with a la carte dishes. It struck a nice balance between indulgent and refined. Our only real call out is the main bar isn’t open on Sundays. For a hotel of this calibre, that felt like an oversight however thankfully, the foyer bar was open, though it lacked the moody, intimate feel we were hoping for.
That said, service across the board remained flawless. When we wanted to toast the weekend with a special bottle of champagne (which wasn’t available in the main bar), the team didn’t hesitate. They had it transferred over from another on-site bar just for us. That kind of above-and-beyond service is what makes Capella shine.
Wellness & Amenities
The rooftop indoor pool is a bit of an oasis, a serene, spa-like space perched high above the city chaos. The pool itself wasn’t heated during our visit, which was slightly disappointing, but the ambience still offered a lovely escape. There’s also a spa and wellness area with all the essentials for a rejuvenating stay although it was small, it was still a great unwind.
What we Loved
- Personalised pre-arrival communication and exceptional service
- Prime CBD location, close to everything
- Spacious room with high ceilings and luxurious finishes
- Incredibly comfortable king bed and luxe bathroom setup
- Attentive staff who went out of their way to make our champagne dreams come true
- Relaxing rooftop pool and spa facilities
What Could’ve Been Better
- The main bar being closed on Sundays felt like a miss
- Rooftop pool wasn’t heated (at least during our stay)
The Bottom Line
Capella Sydney doesn’t just aim for luxury—it redefines it. From the thoughtful service to the architectural elegance and unbeatable location, it’s the kind of hotel that leaves a lasting impression.
Whether you’re celebrating something special (like a wedding, a birthday, or just surviving leg day), this is where you come to feel pampered, seen, and deeply spoiled.
