We visited Queenstown for a wedding (yes, it was romantic and yes, there were mountains involved), and decided to make our stay a little luxe by checking into the St Moritz, a five-star property under the Accor MGallery collection. Given our loyalty to Accor, it felt like a natural fit, plus we’d heard whispers of jaw-dropping views and cozy alpine charm.
We booked a standard room using our Accor Live Limitless account, and while we didn’t get a suite upgrade, we were assigned a top-floor room. It came with pros (quiet, spacious) and cons (hello, stairs), but more on that shortly.
First Impressions:
From the moment we walked into the lobby, St Moritz delivered full alpine ski lodge energy and we don’t mean that in a kitschy way. Think stone walls, plush textures, timber beams, and a space for a roaring log fire. It’s equal parts rustic and refined, and on a chilly day, it feels like exactly where you want to be.
The vibe is relaxed luxury with a distinctly Queenstown twist. There’s an understated confidence to the design, timeless, warm, and very much in sync with its mountain-and-lake setting. The staff were polite and professional, if not overly warm, but we got the sense this is a place that’s happy to let the scenery do the talking.
The Room
We were given a room on the 7th floor, which sounds fantastic until you realise that the lifts only go to Level 6. That meant hauling ourselves and our luggage up one more flight of stairs, not a big deal for us, but definitely worth noting for anyone with mobility concerns.
The room itself was spacious, clean, and had a quiet, tucked-away feel, but also felt… a little like a renovated attic. The ceiling sloped slightly, and while the space was generous, it was also quite dark, with limited natural light and a small window overlooking a balcony (with no lake view, sadly). The sun poured onto the roof during the day, warming things up to sauna-adjacent temperatures. Air con helped, but it took a while to cool down.
Design-wise, it followed the rest of the hotel’s moody alpine aesthetic, tasteful, if slightly underwhelming when compared to the stunning public spaces downstairs. We were expecting a little more wow-factor from a five-star room.
Dining and Drinks
Breakfast was included with our rate and served in the hotel’s restaurant overlooking the lake. The buffet spread was on the more refined end of standard hotel breakfasts, good quality ingredients, fresh fruit, and solid hot options. Not revolutionary, but perfectly pleasant.
The bar downstairs is small but lovely, especially on a rainy afternoon. It has that cozy, intimate feel where you want to sip something smoky and pretend you’re snowed in. Service was friendly, and it never felt overly crowded.
We didn’t dine in for dinner, but with Queenstown’s restaurant scene just a short walk away, there’s no shortage of excellent options nearby.
Amenities & Extras
There’s two small spas here, but the vibe leans more boutique hideaway than full-service resort. What you do get is a beautifully designed lobby space, a solid restaurant and bar, valet parking (for a fee), and a small fitness center.
One thing to note: Queenstown weather is unpredictable. It poured during our stay, and while each room is supposed to be stocked with two umbrellas, ours had none. When we called reception, we were told they’d run out. Not a disaster, but definitely an inconvenience (especially when you’re dressed up for a nice dinner).
Another consideration: the walk back from town is up a steep hill. It’s a short stroll down, but coming home post-dinner or drinks can feel like a mini workout. Nothing too intense, but worth knowing.
The Cost
We booked through the Accor Live Limitless program, using cash instead of points but rates were expensive given the Summer and peak wedding season in Queenstown. Our booking included daily breakfast, and we received Accor member perks (though no significant upgrade).
We had a rental car, but it honestly wasn’t necessary. Unless you’re planning lots of day trips outside of Queenstown, this hotel’s location makes walking a breeze (weather permitting).
What We loved
- Cozy alpine-lodge design with a roaring fire and inviting atmosphere
- Gorgeous lake and mountain views from parts of the hotel
- Excellent location, peaceful, but close to the heart of Queenstown
- Tasty buffet breakfast included in the rate
- Welcoming bar and comfortable common spaces
What Could’ve Been Better
- Room on Level 7 required stairs, lifts only go to Level 6
- Our room was dark, overly warm, and lacked a lake view
- Umbrella mishap during heavy rain
- No pool, spa, or standout amenities for a 5-star property
- Feels more like a 4-star hotel when it comes to in-room experience
The Takeaway
Hotel St Moritz Queenstown is cozy, classy, and confidently understated, with a location that’s hard to beat and views that will make your jaw drop, if you get the right room. The public areas are gorgeous, and the alpine lodge vibe is incredibly well executed.
That said, the rooms (at least ours) didn’t quite match the five-star promise. If you’re going to stay here, we’d strongly recommend booking a lake view room and confirming accessibility if stairs are an issue.
Would we stay again? Possibly, with tweaks. This hotel is perfect for couples, Accor loyalists, and anyone after a quiet, stylish stay above the buzz of Queenstown. Just bring your own umbrella and maybe your hiking legs for that hill.
